Sean learned to sail as a child on dinghys and has over 50 years of sailboat racing and cruising experience. He has owned several boats, including a Hobie 16, a Capri 25, a Ranger 28, and a J105, boats he sailed out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Since 2002 he has owned, raced, and cruised Jamani, a J120 out of San Francisco Yacht Club. Sean has substantial ocean racing experience, including two crewed TransPac races (2003 and 2005), a San Diego to Bishop Rock offshore race (2003), crewed PacCup races and deliveries on Jamani (2008 and 2010), doublehanded PacCups and deliveries on Jamani (2012 and 2018), a singlehanded TransPac race from San Francisco to Kauai with doublehanded delivery (2023), fourteen crewed, double-handed, and single-handed Farallones races, as well as numerous Spinnaker Cup, Bluewater Bash, and other coastal races. Jamani and Sean are frequent competitors in San Francisco Bay buoy races. He has cruised many times since 1979 from San Diego or Los Angeles to Catalina and the Channel Islands and has a San Diego to San Francisco passage in 2008. Sean is a surgeon, has extensive experience with medical emergencies, and has served as boat medical officer on ocean passages. He has extensive formal ocean safety training, including Safety at Sea seminars at Orange Coast College in 2003, the California Maritime Academy in 2008 and 2010, and the hands-on U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea courses at San Francisco Yacht Club in 2017 and California Maritime Academy in 2023. He holds a California Boater Card and completed NASBLA safety training through BoatUS in 2023. Sailing is a family affair for the Mulvihill family, and Sean crews in double-handed races out of San Francisco with his son Jeff, owner of the Olson 30 Werewolf. He is an active member of San Francisco Yacht Club since 2000.
